do you think the obama camp knew mr. romney would be ready with the 47% question answer and decided not give him the chance to clear it up with 65, 67 million people watching? >> definitely a missed opportunity. you see it today. they're going to keep attacking him noor video and keep attacking him on bain and you're seeing him release the president's campaign release another -- >> pardon? go ahead. i'm sorry. interrupted? somebody talk in your ear. >> sorry about that. >> finish your thought. >> you're going to see them attack again. they're going to keep attacking on -- keep saying that mitt romney is bending the truth. that's something you're going to see in the coming weeks. you're going to see them talk -- they released a campaign ad today appearing in eight swing states and you'll see them continue to the portray that in the comes weeks. >> it's an acquired skill, talking in your ear in the middle of a sentence. >> totally. i didn't know where i was for a minute. >> it's all good. saying it wasn't me. we're going t

president obama did not win the first debate against mitt romney. whether or not you're happy about that, he didn't win. but if your takeaway from this conspiracy theory in this debate is the reason the president didn't win is because mitt romney cheated, then what is the utility of that theory for you? what is the utility of that information? how do you think president obama should then prepare for the second debate? should he just do exactly what he did this past wednesday night, except keep a closer eye out for the cheating because that is the only reason he lost? i mean, it may be comforting to tell yourself this is what really went wrong here but that is not really what went wrong here, and making the case that it was what went wrong does not help your candidate. the worst example of this though, the invention of a comforting new parallel reality that does not mean you have to face hard truths. the worst new instance of this is how the right today responded to the new jobs numbers. today the unemployment rate dropped from 8.1% to 7.8%. it didn'

you know, mitt romney during the debate criticized president obama when president obama criticized how much money is given to the oil industry. many people were upset that the president then fired back and said hey, listen, we're starting something with green energy. if you're trying to get a whole new energy sector off the ground, don't you need federal dollars behind it at least at first? >> there are a lot more official ways of doing it than giving money to your friends and having those companies go bankrupt. the reason why it's such a sore point with the administration is they've had a lot of very high profile disasters, solyndra, fisker, and the rest. i think the president, rather than saying yes, we have to subsidize my friends, would do better to say that i think his line is that he is in favor of an all of the above sort of energy policy. but it's really not the case that we're doing better. we had a higher growth rate in 2010. the reason why that rate is going down is because people are giving up and dropping out of the jobs -- the job market. so i think that the essential arg

the reality is those numbers help obama tremendously. at the same time, obama has the opportunity now to come back and do what he did the very next day. i think that was a key day for him. >> if he had that sort of debate performance and then we'd gotten job numbers that had us stuck at 8.2, then you start talking about a crisis at that point for the campaign. >> we have a chance to make it a much bigger story, precisely because the republicans have been so nice to us and delivered, for example, jack welch. the numbers were entirely fixed. he's been chimed in this morning by steve forbes, also said these have been fixed numbers. they intended for them to go down precisely under 8% before the election started. this is some crazy stuff going on on the right here. that might generate enough interest to make the debate -- >> i just want to -- just in case anyone has been sleeping under a rock on friday or something. i just wanted to show what jack welch's response was, it was a tweeted response that got picked up in the news where he basical
